What is the most valuable thing on the planet?
When we talk about value, we have a tendency to attach a monetary value; what is something worth in Dollars, Pounds, Euros, Yen? Most things, even your happiness, can be attached to an economic value. And, because we live in an economic world, it’s almost impossible to imagine a world without money.
So what is the most expensive thing money could buy? At the moment it’s probably the company Apple, with a market value of approximately half a trillion dollars. Just pause and consider that: five hundred billion dollars. It is an amount of money that is almost unimaginable.
Many of you will be reading this blog on an Apple device or computer. The value of this tech-giant comes down to products which are carried in your hand, pocket and bag. I must admit I am a huge fan, not just of Apple products, but of technology as a whole. I am still in awe at what these hand-held devices can now do compared to just ten years ago.
Yet, when I admire the functionality of these gadgets, I realised that what I was really admiring, was the imagination of the person who thought of it in the first place. We now take for granted what these wonderful machines can do, and often express our frustration when we encounter the smallest glitch or delay.
But at one stage, these devices were just an idea, a spark of imagination in a brilliant human mind.
So perhaps the most valuable thing on the planet is our imagination. It is the imagination that forges our dreams and goals, that seeks better and brighter futures. It is the imagination that creates, that cures, that inspires.
If our imagination is the most valuable thing on the planet, then perhaps we can all become philanthropists by giving it away. Maybe the best gift we can give to a loved one or a friend is our imagination, our ideas, our thoughts on how they can live the life they want.
Don’t hold on to your ideas, share them. Create something: paint, write, sculpt, sing – whatever you want to do. Share your imagination with the people around you. It is the most valuable gift you could ever give someone.
